2/2. Steve Harley celebrates the 50th anniversary of the first UK chart appearance of a British rock 'n' roll single. Tommy Steele 's 1956 number-13 debut hit, Rock with the Caveman, signalled a response to the American sound established a few months earlier by Elvis Presley 's Heartbreak Hotel (and two years before that by Bill Haley and His Comets), culminating in Cliff Richard 's Move It! in 1958. This two-parter recalls the distinctively British, pre-Beatles rock 'n' roll sound, with input from John Barry , Joe Brown , Chas McDevitt , Cliff Richard ,
Hank Marvin and Bruce Welch (of the Shadows), Tommy Steele ,
Bert Weedon , Marty Wilde and others.
