from Southend-on-Sea
'Summer is here' is the second hymn this week, and in celebration of the nation's holiday time the first seven programmes in this new series come from seaside towns and villages.
Southend-on-Sea became famous as the haven of millions of London day-trippers who came down the Thames by paddle-steamer to disembark at the longest pleasure Pier in the world. Geoffrey Wheeler talks to some of the local people including fisherman Leslie Thomas, and Colin Frampton, soon to be the Free Church minister in the Falkland Islands. They join members of nearly 100 churches at Crowstone St George's United Reform Church to sing their favourite hymns.
Come, ye faithful, raise the anthem (Unser Herrscher);
Summer Is here: Will your anchor hold?;
May the mind of Christ my Saviour (St Leonards);
Jesus lives! (St Albinus);
In Christ there is no east or west (Lloyd);
You are the King of Glory;
I know that my Redeemer lives! (Philippine);
Praise to the Lord (Praxis pletatfs)
