This Week's Composers: Kurt Weill and Hanns Eisler 5: Music for the People

on BBC Radio 3

In 1950 Weill turned his back on Europe and art music for ever and concentrated all his efforts on a series of Broadway musicals, subjugating aesthetic criteria in favour of popularity. Eisler settled in East Germany, and spent the last 12 years of his life working within the political system he has always championed, composing 'applied music' for the theatre, film, cabaret, TV and public events.
