Maureen Cleave in Newly Pressed
The spick and span title of Newly Pressed has a double-edged meaning. It refers to those discs, fresh off the production line, which come in for comment from record reviewers in this nightly Monday-to-Friday programme for forward-looking record enthusiasts. About 100 discs are hopefully released-it might be said some 'escape' - on the record-buying public each week. Many are destined to disappear without trace; but a handful have that special something which could set them climbing up the charts or, in the case of ballads or comedy records, could make them all-time standard hits.
Each night Newly Pressed invites a journalist to introduce the records and give professional opinions on the selection. The discs are not restricted to pops and their chances for the Top Twenty: there are comedy records, ballads, light classicals-in fact almost any interesting record that's new.
This week Maureen Cleave, of the London Evening Standard, is in the press box. She comes from Ireland, has been on Juke Box Jury, and has lively, uninhibited views on what she likes and why.
