Francesco Cavalli (1602-1676) and Giacomo Carlssiml (1605-1674)
Cavalli and Carissimi were very close contemporaries and yet, so far as we know, they never met. Cavalli spent his entire working life in Venice, while Carissimi hardly ever stirred from Rome. The contrasting cities are reflected in the composers' music: hedonistic Venice has its perfect symbol in Cavalli, famous throughout Europe for his operas, and conservative Rome proved an ideal background for Carissimi whose oratorios and cantatas were equally widely celebrated.
