The second part of Mario Vargas Llosa 's masterpiece is based on a true incident in the 1890s. Colonel Cesar of the Brazilian Army sets out to put down a seemingly minor disturbance, inspired by a preacher who considers the world's first socialist republic to be the "Anti-Christ".
