Dialogues des Carmelites
Poulenc's opera tells the story of Blanche, a young aristocrat who joins the Carmelite convent at Compiegne at the height of the French Revolution. When the convent is attacked and desecrated, the nuns take the vow of martyrdom. The opera is both tranquil and lyrical, and atestamentto Poulenc's strong religious faith.
