Introduced by Harry Carpenter For ten years Sportsnight has led the way in mid-week sports television, covering the major events, meeting the personalities in the news, discussing the issues that matter. Now in its llth series, the programme returns to follow the progress of the extraordinary Swedish tennis player Bjorn Borg , three times Wimbledon champion, who is bidding to win his first us Open Singles title.
Jimmy Connors , the beaten finalist at Wimbledon, has won the title twice, when it was played at Forest Hills. This year the tournament has a new home at Flushing Meadow, New York.

And there's a new venue for tonight's boxing - the Wembley Conference Centre - where Jimmy Batten , the British Light Middle-weight champion, defends his title over 15 rounds against the Southern Area's champion Tony Poole , from Northampton. Also on Mickey Duff 's bill, the dynamic Charlie Magri matched against Sabatino de Fillipo, a leading contender for the Italian Flyweight title.
