Jean Simmons plays Stella, a girl who, against the wishes of her family marries a young writer named Tony (played by Dirk Bogarde) whose only fault seems to be that he has risen to success from a comparatively humble origin. Cecil Parker as Stella's uncle is sympathetic but he is quite unable to avert the parting of their ways. This parting takes Stella on a luxury cruise to the West Indies and leaves Tony to the companionship of people in the walk of life he quired to marry her. It is here that he meets Bert (Stanley Holoway), provincial comedian, the company's press agent (Hugh Williams), and Kathleen Harrison as Ma, their theatrical landlady. In this company Tony also meets Vi (played by Jean Kent) a soubrette whose boy friend (Dermot Walsh) is causing her some anxiety by his attentions to another lady member of the theatrical group Everything ends happily of course.
