8—' Ultimate Folly'
Philip is now studying medicine in London. After failing one examination he is overcome by a desire to see Mildred again and goes to the teashop in Parliament Street. He takes her out, and realises that he is still as much in love with her as ever.
Herbert Lawson has returned to England, and they reminisce about Heidelberg and Paris days. Philip tells Lawson that Mildred has turned him down and is now married to Miller, a salesman. Lawson introduces Philip to a young woman, Mrs. Nesbit, who writes stories for a magazine; she is a cheerful, kind person, and Philip finds her a delightful companion. After a party in Herbert's flat, Philip returns home and finds Mildred waiting for him-her husband has left her penniless and she is expecting a baby. In despair Philip realises that, in spite of everything, he has never ceased to love her.
