A Church That Matters? As a new Archbishop of Canterbury takes office, Anglicans have high hopes of revived prestige forthe established church. The Church of England still intends to exert influence in many areas of politics and society, ranging from prisons and asylum to the morality of bombing Iraq. But the institution Rowan Williams will lead faces paralysing disputes over sexual morality and biblical authority.
