Composers of the Week: Ellington, Evans and Wheeler

on BBC Radio 3

Like Ellington before him, Gil Evans composed for specific musicians whose playing inspired him. The greatest of these was trumpeter Miles Davis , and their collaboration resulted in three albums of the late
50s on which Davis was the only soloist. Ian Carr introduces tracks from these albums, for which
Evans not only produced original pieces but considerably reworked those of other composers.
