Quilley plucks up the courage to contact Beth - an old flame, but for her the glow is fading. Chris, her new boyfriend and school-mate of Quilley's, seems to be living well beyond his apparent means. Protective hackles raised, Quilley's unofficial enquiries about Chris and Goss's investigation of a series of petty thefts and minor break-ins begin to find common ground.
