In 1815 the Lords of the Admiralty annexed a 'stone frigate' in the South Atlantic and an island joined the senior service as HMS Ascension. Today it's one of the last outposts of the British Empire, which the BBC administers under the shadow of the Atlantic Relay Station transmitter.
