Omnibus: Sir John Barbirolli: 'Glorious John'

on BBC One London

A film portrait of the conductor. For people in this country Barbirolli meant the Halle. Yet at 36, and with no international reputation, he had succeeded Toscanini as conductor of the New York Philharmonic, and later, when some here under-valued him, he was acclaimed abroad.
But his audiences always loved him, and thousands discovered music through him. How many of them knew of the terrible depressions that lay behind the jovial public image?
With Lady Barbirolli, Janet Baker, Sir Neville Cardus and others.
