Seven programmes in which Malcolm Billings explores the world of archaeology. 3: Stonehenge
Built of 162 stone blocks, Stonehenge stands on the rolling chalk downland of Salisbury Plain. It is the ruin of a single prehistoric building which has presented archaeologists with an as-yet unsolved puzzle. Almost a million people visit the site each year and the maze of wild opinion about the monument has become more complex than the ruin itself, which stands as one of the greatest memorials to the people of a vanished age.
