Elektra is keen to avenge the murder of her father, and free herself and her sister from the tyranny of their mother. With the help of her long-lost brother, Elektra's desire for matricide is fulfilled.
Before the performance, in Matricide without Tears, Dr Peter Jones , senior lecturer in classics at Newcastle
University, looks at the origins of Strauss's Elektra with readings by members of the Actors of Dionysus.
