2 — ' The Shadow Lengthens '
Produced by Martyn C. Webster :
On the day that the Indian Diamond first cast its shadow over the Verinder family house in Yorkshire, two surprising things happened. Penelope, the daughter of Gabriel Betteredge the family retainer, came across three strolling Indians in the lane by the house, and Franklin Blake arrived from London before he was expected, bringing with him the moonstone left to Rachel Verinder by his uncle John Herncastle.
In search of the maid, Rosanna Spear-man, Gabriel Betteredge had gone to the dreaded Shivering Sand, and it was here that Franklin Blake found him and perturbed the old retainer by his questions.
