Following a daring bullion robbery by Confederate soldiers Cord McNally vows revenge. Most importantly, he determines to find the two traitorous Northerners who were responsible for the death of his best friend and fellow cavalry officer. The search takes him to the town of Rio Lobo and a final confrontation. John Wayne stars in this rousing Western, the third and last in the sequence by Howard Hawks, begun with Rio Bravo and El Dorado.
