Towards the end of December 1850, ships carrying the first body of emigrants to the Canterbury Settlement reached New Zealand. In this talk (originally broadcast on the occasion of the Canterbury Settlement centenary) C. E. Carrington. author of The British Overseas, describes the movement for Colonial reform that was the background to the settlement and the characters of the principal reformers.
