Survive the Savage Sea

on BBC Radio 4 FM

Another chance to hear this programme with Tom Fleming as Dougal Robertson
In June 1972 killer whales in the Pacific Ocean attacked the 19-ton 43-ft schooner Lucette, sailed by a Scottish ex-farmer and his family, and sank it in 60 seconds.
The Robertsons managed to scramble into their inflatable rubber raft and that, plus a 15-ft fibreglass dinghy and a few odds and ends, was the only thing left afloat. So began one of the most astounding survival stories ever recorded. Dougal Robertson and his crew of five: wife, 18-year-old son, 12-year-old twin boys and a student friend decided to try for the coast of Costa Rica, 1,000 miles away. They had emergency rations for only three days. This is the story of their momentous voyage. Adapted from the book Survive the Savage Sea
