The Wimbledon Trophies
The All England Championships are an historic tournament, so it is filling that its trophies should be both sumptuous and full of associations. Take the Renshaw Cup for example. This is the third trophy which the winner of the Gentlemen's Singles Championship receives. It is a replica of a cup presented annually by the surviving members of the family of the late Ernest and William Renshaw who dominated the men's singles and doubles during the 1880s.
The other two trophies which are presented to the men's champion are the King George V Challenge Cup and the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club's Challenge Cup, both of which he can hold for only a year-although he also has replicas to keep. Why two cups ? Because in the old days the knock-out competition was played without the previous year's winner. He stayed out until the final was played and someone emerged to meet him in a challenge round. Thus it was necessary to have two cups: one for the knock-out competition and one for the challenge round.
The same situation exists in the men's doubles where the two cups are presented by the Oxford University Lawn Tennis Club and Sir Herbert Wilberforce, an ex-president of the All England Club. As in the other championship events the runners-up receive silver medals and the defeated semi-finalists bronze medals.
The winner of the Ladies' Singles Championship is rewarded with an enormous silver-gilt plate and the winning pair in the Ladies' Doubles with a cup presented by H.R.H. Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent, the President of the All England club. Two other trophies evoke the Edwardian tennis scene: Mr. S.H. Smith and Mr. A.H. Riseley, O.S.E., who won the doubles in 1902 and 1906 presented respectively the Mixed Doubles Championship Challenge Cup and the cup for the Ladies' Plate.
