Death of a Miner

on BBC One London

A film about a man: a pit: a community, by Philip Donnellan
Celebrating the life of Jack Elliot of Birtley, Co. Durham and his wife Emma.
In 1962 Jack talked to a film camera about his life as a miner, how he had hammered out his social, political, and religious convictions. In 1966 he died. In 1967 the 300-year-old pit where four generations of his family had worked was finally demolished. These events set against the background of change in the North East are the basis of this tribute.
