KATHLEEN HAY (Mezzo-Soprano)
When Jean Baptiste Weckerlin realised that he was never likely to make a great deal of money by adding to the world's stock of original compositions, he began digging into the past and bringing to light a rich treasure of old French songs—chansons populaires, rondes, and folk-songs of every description. He dusted and polished these very carefully, gave them charming accompaniments, and published volume after volume, thereby rendering a very great service to France and incidentally to singers. Weckerlin was born in 1821 and lived for nearly ninety years, digging, dusting and polishing most of the time. And will he not come again? (Traditional, from Hamlet) How should I your true love know?
