When Mildred Rogers comes back to Philip, telling him that her husband has left her and that she is going to have a child, he realises that, in spite of everything, he still loves her, and is determined to do all he can to help her.
Mildred's child is born. Philip continues his studies and passes the Second Conjoint Examination; he and Mildred celebrate with a special dinner in his rooms, and Harry Griffiths, a fellow medical student, calls to congratulate Philip. Mildred is very taken with this charming young man, and when later she tells Philip that she no longer wants to go on their proposed holiday to Paris he realises she is in love with Harry. Philip is desolate, and decides to take a holiday at Blackstable.
