Dr. and Mrs. Dale cancelled their Cornish holiday and decided to go to Italy in mid-September to deal with Cousin Bertram's affairs. Dr. Dale and Mrs. Freeman had an argument over the ' Poodlery.' Dr. Dale then told Henry about the whole thing and Henry decided that Mrs. Freeman should be made to live with him, so that she could be looked after properly. Sally was caught up in a protest march along a footpath in Gimlet Green that Charles Lamont had closed to the villagers, and Charles thought that she had joined in with them against him.
