Schubert's two overtures 'In the Italian Style', in C and D, were composed in 1817. At this period the most popular music of the day in Vienna was that of Rossini. Although Schubert admired many things about Rossini's genius, at the same time he poked fun at some of the more trite and conventional devices which Rossini was apt to exploit. These two Italian overtures may be considered therefore as caricatures of Rossini's mannerisms. As such they are attractive examples of the lighter sides of classical music.
