The place: Anchorstone, a small seaside resort in East Anglia. Time: the early 1900s. Eustace and Hilda live with their widowed father and Aunt Sarah in a house called ' Cambo.' Even as children playing on the seashore it is always Hilda, the devoted elder sister, who proves the stronger character.
