St. Wilfrid was born in 634, the son of a Northumbrian thegn, and died in 709, when he was visiting monasteries he had founded in Mercia.
His body was buried in the church of St. Peter at Ripon. His biographer, Eddius, wrote of him that he was ' courteous to everybody, active in body, a quick walker, eager for every good work, never cast down '. He is named in the Roman Martyrology, and several English dioceses keep his feasts.
