Richard Bebb in The Mystery of X-Craft 5
In September 1943 three midget submarines known as X-Craft 5, 6 and 7 made their way with appalling difficulty up a Norwegian fjord to attack the German battleship Tirpitz. X6 and X7 broke through submarine nets, dropped their charges, and then were either scuttled or sunk, their crews killed or captured. Both commanders were awarded vcs at the end of the war. But what happened to X-Craft 5? Her commander. Lieutenant H. Henty-Creer , received only a mention in dispatches.
In 1974 British divers recovered wreckage in the Norwegian fjord which suggests that X-Craft 5 also took a vital part in this gallant action.
