Grand Union Orchestra

on BBC Radio 3

Rhythm of the Tides by Tony Haynes is the result of a two-year collaboration between Grand Union and a group of musicians from Lisbon. It takes its inspiration from the epic poem Lusiads by the 16th-century Portuguese poet Luis Camoes. Debbie Dickinson introduces a recording of a concert given by the 21-piece orchestra in the Queen Elizabeth Hall , London, last October, when they performed the work with singers Maria Joao
Silveira, Paulo de Carvalho ,
Brenda Rattray and Richard Scott. The orchestra also included Chris Biscoe
(reeds). Paul Jayasinha (trumpet/ cello), Sadjo Djolo (kora), Wen Xin Zhao (pipa), Balu Srivastav (sitar/ tabla), Wye (djembe) and Brian Abrahams (drums). During the interval. Tony Haynes talks to Debbie Dickinson about his large-scale compositions. Producer Derek Drescher
