Chaim Herzog ,
President of Israel
Soldier, diplomat, lawyer and writer, Chaim Herzog is widely recognised as Israel's leading military strategist. Born in Belfast, he fought as a major in the British Army in the Second World War. After the war, at the age of 30, he became chief of Israel's military intelligence.
Later he was appointed Israel's permanent representative at the UN and sat as a Labour member of the Knesset. In 1983 he was elected President. In a recent speech to the European Parliament he argued for a new dialogue for peace in the Middle East, without outside interference and without PLO participation.
Today in Jerusalem, linked to
London by satellite, he answers questions from around the world in a phone-in chaired by Sue MacGregor and broadcast simultaneously on BBC World Service.
