2: On Playing the Flute
As well as composing almost exclusively for the flute, Quantz was an expert player and wrote many concertos and trio sonatas for his patron, Frederick the Great.
Frederick expected obedience from his staff in all matters, whether political or artistic, and Quantz. always reliable, was a favourite of the king and enjoyed special privileges. CPE Bach, on the other hand, would offend his patron with a quick wit and an independent mind. and did not hide his frequent frustrations with the constraints of court life. Today, a flute sonata by Frederick the Great, Quantz's Trio Sonata in C with Franz Briiggen
(flute), and his Flute Concerto in G with soloist Joost Tromp (flute), CPE Bach's Variations on "La Folia" played by Robert Woolley
(harpsichord), and his Symphony in C, Wql82 No 3.
