1/4. Richard Carpenter profiles trumpeter, composer and producer Herb Alpert, who co-founded A&M Records and had seismic success in the 1960s as frontman for instrumental septet the Tijuana Brass, whose breezy, decorative hits include The Lonely Bull (El Sorro Torro), A Taste of Honey, Tijuana Taxi, Spanish Flea, Casino Royale and A Banda.
His 1968 solo vocal recording of Bacharach and David's This Guy's in Love with You remains one of the monumental ballads in pop. The series explores the many facets of Alpert's hugely prolific (and profitable) career. Contributors include Herb Alpert, A&M partner Jerry Moss, Sergio Mendes, Roger Hodgson (of Supertramp), singer Chris Montez, Bob Findlay (of the Tijuana Brass) and Burt Bacharach.
