The British Empire: Echoes of Britannia's Rule: 1: Oh! the Jubilee

on BBC One London

An Imperial story in 13 parts.

The Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897 was the high noon of the British Empire - an Empire 91 times the area of the mother country, a quarter of the earth's surface.
Watching the great military procession through London, crowds cheered the 'Soldiers of the Queen' who had fought 70 Colonial wars during the 60 years of Victoria's reign.

"If only history could have been taught like this at school." (The Sun)
"I know that I laughed and I cried and that chiefly the pride kept swelling in my breast." (The Times)
