Can Democracy Survive?: X: Patching

on National Programme Daventry

View in Radio Times

The Rt. Hon. Lord Eustace Percy
Tonight Lord Eustace Percy discusses the first of two alternative remedies for the political and economic deadlock of today. The social ideals of the nineteenth century have been discredited by recent experience: can we make a fresh start? Modern society is weak in initiative. The organizations built up during the era of the pursuit of wealth are rigid in structure. Limited liability companies, trade unions, and political parties are all instances of over-organization threatening mental petrifaction. Present-day polities consist of continual attempts to patch up temporary compromises between rigidly organized interests. The League of Nations is an example of the same sort of effort at compromise in international affairs. Is this the way to solve present problems? Next week Lord Eustace Percy discusses the possibility of scrapping the whole system of present-day politics.
