When Gardiner went to Frankfurt in 1894 British music was entering a second golden age. In 1913 his fine choral work April gave expression to much that was extinguished at the outbreak of war; in 1923 his Philomela was, Gibbons-like, a swansong for an era that had passed.Gardiner'seffortson behalf of other composers have tended to obscure his own creative achievements. STEPHEN LLOYD talks 'about his life and work, and illustrates the fine qualitiesofhismusic.
Followed at 3.55* by a recital of Gardiner's songs given by DAVID WILSON-JOHNSON (baritone) DAVID OWEN NORRIS (piano)
