Maria Elsner in 'The Gypsy Princess'

on National Programme Daventry

View in Radio Times

A broadcasting version founded upon the English stage version by Arthur Miller
Lyrics by Arthur Stanley
Music by Emmerich Kalman

The story of Emmerich Kalman's Gypsy Princess concerns Sylva, a cabaret star, and Maria Elsner, who made such a successful debut in The Countess Maritza last November (in spite of the fact that she was suffering from influenza and had to sustain this exacting role with a temperature of 101), is coming over to England to play the lead in this revival.

Maria Elsner was for three years at the Dresden Opera House under Fritz Busch; played the lead in Rheinhardt's production of The Student Prince in Berlin and in Fledermaus in Paris under Bruno Walter, and she has sung in Figaro at the Salzburg Festival. Since her last visit to England she has been playing in operetta at The Hague.
