The Blech String Quartet consists of four young musicians. Harry Blech, the leader, was born in London in 1910, studied music in London, Manchester, and Prague, and joined the BBC Symphony Orchestra as first violin when it was founded in 1930. He resigned six years later to devote his time to chamber music.
The second violin, Edward Silverman was born in 1916, studied at the Royal Academy of Music, and while still a student he appeared at Queen's Hall and played concertos on three occasions.
Douglas Thomson, viola, comes from Rhodesia where he was born in 1912. He was educated at the Cape University, where he won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music.
William Pleeth, the cellist, is a Londoner. Born in 1916, he studied at the London Cello School and then went on to the Leipzig Conservatorium under Julius Klengel. His first appearance before the microphone was at the age of seventeen.
The Blech String Quartet have already secured a reputation on the Continent, having appeared with great success in Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam.
