A Palace for the People
The Crystal Palace which housed the Great Exhibition of 1851 was later rebuilt at
Sydenham in South London.
There it stood for more than 70 years, a favoured venue for concerts, circuses and entertainments of all kinds. Its end came 50 years ago, on 30 November 1936, when it was destroyed in the most spectacular blaze the capital had seen since the Great Fire of London of 1666. This programme tells the story of the Crystal Palace with the recorded recollections of people still living who remember it. Narrator Noel Johnson
