William Wordsworth , who was born in 1908. is a direct descendant of the poet's brother. After working with several masters, and also on his own. he went to Edinburgh in 1936 to study with Sir Donald Tovey, whose teaching he describes as a revelation. During the war he ran an agricultural settlement, and for a year or more music had to be set aside, until he met with an accident which forced him to take three months' rest. It was then that he wrote his first string quartet, which was awarded the Clements Memorial Prize in 1941 Wilfrid Mellers Is both a composer and a writer on music.
