The Record Producers: George Martin

on BBC Radio 1 England

The third of 18 programmes
Introduced by Andy Peebles
George Martin's influence on the world of pop/rock music is incalculable.
Through The Beatles he helped to change the face of British music, taking us overnight from being a nation of second-rate copyists to one of major international force. The unprejudiced approach that he brought to working with The Beatles resulted not only from his own ability as a musician, but from years of experimentation with sound, and comedy in particular. Immediately prior to The Beatles he had been successfully helping to expand the careers of Peter Ustinov, Spike Milligan and Peter Sellers on record and developing production techniques that were to considerably assist the early ambitions of The Beatles. His post-Beatles work has featured successful collaborations with Jeff Beck, America, Jimmy Webb, and more recently Cheap Trick. He is currently completing the next Paul McCartney album.
