Gary Mabbutt , captain of Tottenham Hotspur football team, was just 17 when he discovered he had diabetes, a potentially life-threatening condition that needs controlling with daily medication and an extremely strict dietary plan. Specialists advised the young Mabbutt to forget his dream of becoming a professional footballer - he had just signed for Bristol Rovers.
