A Panorama Special: Inside the Soviet Union - Kiev

on BBC One London

This week, Princess Anne and Prince Philip visit Kiev, the capital of the Ukraine. It is the first time that members of the British Royal Family have ever visited the Soviet Union. What sort of city will they see?
To find out, Julian Pettifer and a Panorama team spent three weeks in Kiev, and with the help of Novosti Press Agency, filmed its citizens at work and at play. They found that, despite enormous destruction during the war and the loss of nearly half its inhabitants, Kiev has grown into a prosperous city, in fact, the third largest in the USSR.
The film looks at what living under a communist system means to the Kiev man in the street - a system that regulates everything from the books he reads to the price of his food and the size of his garden.
Tonight's report provides a rare glimpse into ordinary life in the Soviet Union.
