Jenny Thompson aims for the first of five potential gold medals. This evening's other finals are the women's 400m individual medley and the men's 200m freestyle.

Great Britain's men begin the defence of their 1988 Olympic title with their first group match against the African champions Egypt. Commentary by Nigel Starmer-Smith and former England goalkeeper Ian Taylor.
Cycling
The women's individual road race - held for only the third time in Olympic history.
