Some Seamen of the West Country ' Plymouth and the Hawkins Family'
A. L. Rowse
In this series, A. L. Rowse will tell Western listeners all about famous Devon seamen of Elizabethan times. Today he will discuss the great Hawkins family, several members of which played an important part in naval history and the life of Plymouth. There was, for instance, Sir John Hawkins , who built the ships that fought against the Spanish Armada. Then there was his brother
William, Mayor of Plymouth in that memorable year of 1588. A third celebrity was young Sir Richard Hawkins , who fought a great Spanish galleon off the coast of Peru, was captured, and finally taken prisoner to Spain. What happened to Sir Richard when he returned home to England will be included in this talk.
