Antonio Carlos Gomes was born in 1839 and died in 1896. He was born in Brazil, of Portuguese parentage, and early promise of considerable musical ability gained him the patronage of the Emperor Don Pedro II, who sent him to Europe to study at Milan Conservatoire. His first stage work was given at Rio de Janeiro in 1861, and nine years later his fame was established by the tragic opera // Guarani, which, since its initial production at La Scala, Milan, has been performed all over the world.
Fosca is not one of the best known of the operas of Gomes, but it provides many opportunities for first-class dramatic singing.
