Cheltenham Festival
The Lighthouse
Peter Maxwell Davies 's dramatic and atmospheric chamber opera, inspired by a true story, which opened this year's festival. In December 1900, a ship in the Atlantic reported the light out at Flannan lighthouse and the lighthouse tender
Hesperus was dispatched to investigate. What its crew discovered sparked one of the most curious maritime mysteries of all time. The light was in perfect working order but the three-man crew of the lighthouse had seemingly disappeared into thin air. Had the men been swept away in a storm or were there other forces at work?
