Overture In E minor (1819)...Schubert

Beethoven's Symphony No. 7: Saturday

The Symphony in C was edited by Fruz Stein and published in 1911. The orchestral parts (evidently copied out towards the end of the eighteenth century) had been discovered at Jena; on the second violin part was written 'par Louis van Beethoven,' and on the cello part 'Symphonie von Bethoven' (sic). It is not difficult to persuade oneself that the Symphony is an early manifestation of the genius of Beethoven. Raymond Chevreuille, the Belgian composer, won the second Italia prize in the 1950 competition with his D'un diable de bricquet. His Piano Concerto No. 2 was written to be played by the competitors in the Queen Elisabeth Prize for pianists held in Brussels last year. (H.R.)
