By LILIAS MACKINNON
FERUCCIO BUSONI 'S contributions to the pianoforte repertory are so important as probably to outlive his reputation as a great pianist. Not, indeed, his original compositions. but works of others that he edited. The slogan circulated by a publisher to the effect that ' Bach today means Bach-Busoni ' is truer than many another catch-phraso. Busoni rendered inestimable service to all students of piano'. forte music by his erudite editing and interpretative guidance,
SERGE PROKOFIEV is still young-only
40-to have had the success he undoubtedly has. Ten years ago he wrote an opera, The Love of the Three Oranges, a grotesque fairy tale set to equally grotesque inusic. It had great success, as did also Chout. a ballet written for Diaghilev's Russian Ballet.
TGOR STRAVINSKY started out as a rebel, but revolt is for the young, and Stravinsky is now nearly fifty. His reputation is based on-his earher works. Petrushka, that delightful ballet which' was the gem of many Russian Ballet seasons, was his first success in 1912, and there are those who assort that The Rite of Spring, in 1913, was his last, and that the tide of modernism has raced past him and left him stranded. But Stravinsky remains unmoved.
