SERGE PROKOFIEV is still young-only
40-to have had the success he undoubtedly has. Ten years ago he wrote an opera, The Love of the Three Oranges, a grotesque fairy tale set to equally grotesque inusic. It had great success, as did also Chout. a ballet written for Diaghilev's Russian Ballet.
TGOR STRAVINSKY started out as a rebel, but revolt is for the young, and Stravinsky is now nearly fifty. His reputation is based on-his earher works. Petrushka, that delightful ballet which' was the gem of many Russian Ballet seasons, was his first success in 1912, and there are those who assort that The Rite of Spring, in 1913, was his last, and that the tide of modernism has raced past him and left him stranded. But Stravinsky remains unmoved.
